Steve Herman is VOA's White House Bureau Chief, and has travelled with U.S. President Donald Trump to more than 10 countries, racking up several dozen flights on Air Force One. He is a frequent inquisitor of the President in the White House Oval Office, on the South Lawn, at airport tarmacs, inside the presidential plane and on overseas trips. During White House press briefings, Herman is one of the few correspondents called on, who asks breaking news geo-political questions, especially concerning Asia.
The veteran journalist, who has travelled to 70 countries, spent more than a quarter of a century in Asia, including 16 years in Tokyo, with stints as VOA's Correspondent and Bureau Chief in India, South Korea and Thailand. Before joining VOA, Herman was an AP staff newsman and also reported for CBS News and Canada's CBC Radio network.
Herman served as VOA's Senior Diplomatic Correspondent, based at the State Department after returning to the United States in 2016. These days Herman, from Washington, also frequently appears on major radio and TV networks around the world, including BBC, to discuss what's happening at the White House.
Herman was President of the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan (1997-98) and subsequently served as Chairman of the Foreign Press in Japan for about five years. He also was elected as President of the Seoul Foreign Correspondents' Club during his posting on the Korean Peninsula and is a former governor of the Overseas Press Club of America. He currently serves on the Board of Governors of the American Foreign Service Association as the representative of the staff of the U.S. Agency for Global Media.
A prominent journalist on Twitter (@W7VOA), Herman was a finalist for the Shorty Awards for the best content creators on social media. A graduate of Thomas Edison State University, Herman holds an M.A. in Public Diplomacy from Mountain State University and has also studied at the post-graduate level at American University's School of International Service, Bath University and Harvard.
